Overview

Master of Arts in Carnatic Music provide a comprehensive and incremental approach to the theoretical language of music, supported by finer nuance to practical performance. Theoretical musical knowledge enhances and supports the student’s practical studies. At the end of this program students are well equipped in all aspects that are important in the study of Carnatic music to take on higher educational and creative opportunities.Program Learning Outcomes:

Upon the completion of the program, the students

1. Will have comprehensive knowledge of Carnatic and traditional Indian music.

2. Mastery over core musical concepts like Raga Lakshanas, study of allied ragas, vivadi ragas, gamakas, 22 srutis and other aesthetic concepts.

3. Will be well equipped to present difficult aspects of Carnatic Music like creative or Manodharma Sangita, acquire in-depth knowledge of concepts like Raga Alapana, Tanam, Niraval and Kalpana svaras, which can catapult them into becoming practitioners or teachers of this genre.

4. Will acquire a huge repertoire of compositions of great composers like Tyagaraja, Shyama Sastri and Muddusvami Dikshitar (The Music Trinity) and other significant composers, which is the key to advanced learning and the gateway to creative music or Manodharma.

5. Will have honed research skills, and kindled their aptitude in Thesis writing and cultivated their independent and individualistic thinking.

Duration: Two-year program. (2 semesters in each year)
Required Units: 30 credit units

Eligibility Criteria

Admission Prerequisites:

A Bachelor’s degree from an approved or accredited institution is required
Practical music experience of at least 6 years

GCM 503: Improvisational aspects of compositions and Devotional music.
GCM 504: Allied ragas and vivadi raga compositions, Ragamalikas, Varnams.
GCM 505: Compositions of Tyagaraja.
GCM 506: Musicology-2.
GCM 507: Compositions of Muthuswamy Dikshitar and Syama Sastry.
GCM 508: Concert (Performance).
GCM 510: Thesis.
GCM 515: Voxology.

Evaluation:

The evaluation has 4 components- Final exams, Mid-term exams, assignments, and Thesis. Students will be awarded a degree in Master of Arts in Carnatic Music, on their successful completion of all the required courses, with a GPA of 3.0 or higher based on the evaluation weightage across the various methods/metrics, thesis, and oral defense.

Notice to Prospective Degree Program Students

This institution is provisionally approved by the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education to offer degree programs. To continue to offer this degree program, this institution must meet the following requirements:

Become institutionally accredited by an accrediting agency recognized by the United States Department of Education, with the scope of the accreditation covering at least one degree program.

Achieve accreditation candidacy or pre-accreditation, as defined in regulations, by March 30, 2018, and full accreditation by March 30, 2021.

If this institution stops pursuing accreditation, it must:

Stop all enrollment in its degree programs, and

Provide a teach-out to finish the educational program or provide a refund.

An institution that fails to comply with accreditation requirements by the required dates shall have its approval to offer degree programs automatically suspended.

Tuition Fees:

$9,000 to complete all the 30 credit units in the Master of Arts program.

This Diploma program seeks to instill detailed learning of both practical and theoretical application to understand the musicology around which the Carnatic music revolves. This course enables the students to understand classical music with all its essentialities.

Duration: One year (2 semesters)
Required Units: 15 credit units
Required Courses: Total of 5 courses

Eligibility Criteria

Admission Prerequisites:

A high school diploma or GED is required
Practical music experience of at least 4 years

Evaluation:

A student enrolled in the diploma program is evaluated using the following methods/metrics:

Course Written Exam at the end of each course
Program Final Exam at the completion of all courses: The final exam will be a combination of written exam and a practical performance exam

Assignments: Students have to complete assignments in each course before taking the course exam

Quizzes: Students have to complete quizzes in each course before taking the course exam

Students will be awarded the diploma after they earn a minimum of 2.0 GPA.

Tuition Fees:

$5,400 to complete all the 15 credit units in the Diploma program.

The main objective of the Certificate Program is to initiate students to the sublime art form, the Indian Carnatic Music. This program is designed to cover the fundamentals of music both in theoretical and practical ways, that create and develop the love and interest for Carnatic Music.

Duration: 2 semesters
Required Units: 9 credit units
Required Courses: Total of 3 courses

Eligibility Criteria

Admission Prerequisites:

A high school diploma or GED is required
Practical music experience of atleast 3 years

Core Courses:

CCM 101: Basic and Textual Theory.
CCM 102: Musical Compositions- 1.
CCM 103: Musical Compositions- 2.

Evaluation:

A student enrolled in this program is evaluated using the following methods/metrics:

Course Written Exam at the end of each course
Program Final Exam at the completion of all courses together: This final exam will be a combination of a written exam and a practical performance demonstration exam

Assignments: Students have to complete assignments in each course before taking the course exam

Quizzes: Students have to complete quizzes in each course before taking the course exam

Students will be awarded the certificate after they earn an overall combined GPA of 2.0 based on the evaluation weightages across the various methods/metrics.

Tuition Fees:

$2,700 to complete all the 9 credit units in the Certificate program.
